Welcome....

School Pastoral Care is an approach to education which seeks to value and develop the young person at every level. It implies caring for the quality of relationships between all the partners in the school community. It involves the engagement of all school polices, processes and programmes in the development of the appropriate structures, roles and resources to support the development of the emerging adult.

New Services

Being responsive to the real needs of schools in the pastoral area continues to be the guiding purpose of IAPCE. This year that is being expressed in our expanding the range of supports and programmes on offer to schools. Included with this Newsletter is our Programme Brochure with ten areas addressed from Class Tutors to Whole School Evaluation and Parent Groups. Schools still have a preference for in-school interventions ensuring that any programme is tailored to their needs – we will continue to make this our priority while from time to time offering regional courses.

Northern Ireland

I have had a number of very successful meetings with our colleagues in NAPCE NI to explore how we could link and cooperate more effectively and to examine the nature of any future relationship. I am grateful to Linda Heggarty and Rosemary Briggs for facilitating these conversations on behalf of NAPCE NI. It was especially good to have both meet recently other members of the National Executive and also to address and present to our Annual Conference. I also had the opportunity earlier in the year to be present at their annual gathering.

Conference

Positive Behaviour – Addressing the Real Needs was our theme this year and again a very positive turnout and excellent feedback. I am grateful to Siobhan Foster Ryan of our Executive who identified and facilitated our speakers and to our administrator Ger Carberry who managed so many aspects of the organisation of the day so very well. A full report of the conference is contained here. In terms of our agm, Conference was given an overview of the activities of IAPCE over the past year as well as plans for the coming year.
